NEW ARTS CENTRE PROJECT TO BEGIN SOON

Work on building an arts centre and a revamp of Spennymoor Leisure Centre is to begin within months. After four years of planning, contractors for the project will soon be appointed. The £470,000 scheme will see much of the existing building overhauled with new facilities, with the hope of boosting the towns’ economy. Director of Leisure sevices, Phil Ball, hopes it will support artists by providing them with studios and an exhibition or performance venue. He said “The plans we have for Spennymoor are born out of four years of research, public consultation and planning.” Among the conversions, the bar will be transformed into a cafe bar, and the cafe and reception area will be turned into exhibition space which will double up as a foyer for the theatre and cinema to be created in the Capricorn Suite. There will also be a dance studio, boxing gym and an artists’ workshop. Council Officers met with contractors last week to discuss the project, which will get underway this September, with a view to being completed next summer.
